For the second week in a row, senior TJ Lastorka pitched No. 3 Mobile Christian into the next round of the playoffs.
Lastorka pitched a complete game and struck out seven as the Leopards shut out No. 4 Trinity 5-0 in Montgomery in Game 3 of their Class 4A quarterfinal series. The teams split the first two games on Thursday.
Mobile Christian (23-11) will host Sipsey Valley in the best-of-three semifinals next week. Sipsey (18-14) advanced with a 6-3, 3-0 sweep of LAMP on Friday.
Mobile Christian 5-2, Trinity 3-3: Leopards, Wildcats headed to Game 3
No. 3 Mobile Christian and No. 4 Trinity split their Class 4A quarterfinal doubleheader on Thursday and will play a decisive Game 3 Friday afternoon with the winner advancing to the state semifinals.
Lastorka allowed just two hits and two walks on Friday, less than a week after he got the win in Game 3 against American Christian.
He got all the offense he needed from fellow senior Hunter Redding, whose grand slam made it a 5-0 game. Ethan Hearn went 2-for-3 and Chance Vaught stole three bases.
“What a great day for our three seniors,” Mobile Christian coach Talley Haines said. "JT coming out and pitching the way he did. Ethan played great and obviously the big blow was Hunter’s grand slam to break it open.
“You always hear that it takes a good group of seniors to make a run, and we have that. Our three guys know how to win.”
Mobile Christian won the Class 3A state title a year ago before moving up to Class 4A under the AHSAA’s new competitive balance rule.
